Religious and Cultural Observance - Ramadan

This year, the first day of Ramadan is Wednesday, March 22. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year, a time for spiritual discipline for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Mohammed. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

Ramadan begins with a half “O Day” on March 22, followed by an O Day on March 23. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete 2022-23 School Year Calendar.

Ramadan Accommodations

All students at Ravensworth are offered an alternate space during the lunch period instead of the cafeteria during Ramadan.  Teachers will be checking in with students to learn their preference prior to the start of Ramadan. Parents are also welcome to contact their child’s teacher to share their request and any questions or concerns.

  Proposed Updates to the SR&R

Proposed Updates to Student Rights and Responsibilities The Department of Special Services will be hosting two virtual meetings for the FCPS community regarding proposed updates to the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Regulation.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Perspective. Perspective means you appreciate when people see things in different ways. You have the ability to understand the world from multiple points of view.

Perspective is also referred to as wisdom and is distinct from intelligence. People with this strength are sought out for advice because they see the big picture and can make sense of the world’s complexity. This strength of perspective gives individuals the ability to see to the heart of difficult matters and achieve clarity. Most importantly, they are honest and behave in an ethically consistent manner.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

  Positivity Project

Identifying and appreciating the good in others is a core tenet of the Other People Matter Mindset. This isn’t always what comes naturally. Often, it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment. The problem is that this negativity usually leads to problems – for us, for the other person, and for our relationships.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

A message from The Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

These last couple of weeks we have experienced an interesting range of weather and while we cannot tell whether this is fake spring or the real thing a little early, we are trying our best to have outside activities. We are also experiencing some behaviors in the building that we do not normally see until around spring break. As you are having conversations with your child, please include the importance of being respectful to peers and staff. We have a number of activities coming up this year and we want to make sure everyone is able to enjoy them.

Over the next few weeks we have several family engagement events scheduled.  Ravensworth parents/guardians are invited to the Family Engagement Meeting Next Wednesday, March 15th from 6:30-7:30 pm in the library.  During the meeting we will brainstorm ideas to engage with our school community and planning opportunities to celebrate our community’s cultural differences.  On Tuesday, March 21st, we are hosting a Family Math Night.  Ravensworth students and their families can drop by between 5:30-7:00 pm to learn new math games that they can take home with them.  We hope you can join us!

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of your child’s learning.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Family Engagement Meeting

On Wednesday, March 15th from 6:30-7:30 pm in the Ravensworth Library, we will be hosting a Family Engagement Meeting.  We are inviting parents/guardians who are interested in planning opportunities to celebrate our community’s cultural differences.  During the meeting we will brainstorm ideas to engage with our school community.  We hope to see you there!

Your Views and Opinions Are Important to Us!

On Monday, March 13, Ravensworth parents/guardians will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, management (human resources and organizational), communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism.

The questionnaire will be collected online between March 13 and March 24. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter!

  • Early Literacy Programs and Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) work with parents to help prepare their children for school.

Community liaisons are available to assist families with the registration process and answer any questions. For more information, visit the Early Childhood Registration webpage

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Identifying and Appreciating the Good in Others. It’s important to deliberately work to identify and appreciate others’ character strengths.

Strategic Planning is in process and will incorporate feedback from school staff, families, students, and community partners and organizations. Please encourage your students to participate in this unique opportunity to share their voices.

FCPS is currently seeking secondary students in grades 7-12 who are interested in participating in a Strategic Plan focus group. FCPS is hosting four virtual focus groups for secondary students in March:

Interested students should check their email for a form to sign up for the focus groups. Students will be asked to provide their student ID, so their parents/caregivers can be identified and contacted to ask for consent to participate.

If you have any questions about the student focus groups or you would like to learn more about this opportunity, please contact [email protected].

Transportation – Kiss and Ride

Please help us set good examples for students!  There are crosswalks at Nutting Dr. and Gosport Ln. and also at Nutting Dr. and Ellet Rd.  It is much safer to cross Nutting Dr. at these corners than to park opposite the bus loop and cross Nutting Dr. without a crosswalk. Kiss and Ride is a much safer route to use to drop-off and pick-up students.  Please keep this in mind.

Also, while using Kiss and Ride, as you approach patrols for drop-off or pick-up, do not use your phone.  The Kiss and Ride area is a cell free zone.

We appreciate you helping us keep our students safe.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means you master new topics on your own or in school.

Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize of a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.

Developing a love of learning is highly beneficial for an individual. It means that they are intrinsically motivated to deepen their existing skills and abilities or learn something completely new. Since intrinsically motivated action is correlated with positive emotions, those who act on their love of learning may also have enhanced mental and physical health. Additionally, individuals who love learning have the desire and ability to overcome challenges, due to a sense of autonomy and control over their environment.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Humility. Humility means you do not seek the spotlight. You let your actions speak for themselves.

Humble people have an accurate (not underestimated) sense of their abilities and achievements. They hold the capacity to acknowledge their mistakes and limitations, and are open to advice and new ideas. They do not show off their possessions or accomplishments.

Developing humility is associated with positive developmental outcomes in individuals. It allows a person to honestly reflect on their abilities and acknowledge how and where they can improve. Humility opens them up to new ideas, advice, and (consequently) abilities that pride, arrogance, or pretentiousness often block. Therefore, humility makes them desired members of a team.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Lockdown Drill

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school next week.  Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students were exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills in the first 60 days of the school year.  They will participate in our final drill this school year.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Does Your Child Refuse to Go to School?

Each year, nearly 5% of youth experience school refusal. This refers to a child refusing to go to school on a regular basis or remain in school throughout the day due to significant emotional distress. School refusal includes kindergarten students with relatively mild separation anxiety and more severe cases where a student misses weeks or months of school because of debilitating anxiety or depression.

Read how to get your child back to school in the Healthy Minds Blog or learn more about attendance policies.

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love. Love means you value close relationships with others and being close to people.

The character strength of love represents the way we think, feel, and behave towards the people with whom we have close relationships. When one person loves another person, that person: comforts and makes the other feel safe; sacrifices on the other’s behalf; supports the other during struggles; and places the others' needs ahead of their own. If you love a person, that person makes you feel safe and secure. You can be yourself with that person. You miss that person when they are not around.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

It is hard to believe that we have begun the second half of the school year.  Today your children will be bringing home their 2nd quarter progress reports.  Families with children who have IEPs will receive their 2nd quarter IEP progress reports by email from their child’s case manager with a hard copy being sent home via US mail.  This is a new procedure for our IEP progress reports as we move to next quarter parents having access online through ParentVue.  We are proud of our students’ hard work and perseverance as they reach their learning goals.

I wanted to update you and let you know that Mr. Bourjaily has returned from leave.  He’s had the opportunity to visit classrooms and check in with students since his return.  He is happy to be back working with our students, staff, and families.

We appreciate your continued partnership and support of your child.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Cheering Others’ Successes. This means when other people succeed, I am happy for them and cheer them on.

Being happy for other people when they succeed isn’t always everyone’s initial reaction. Often, it’s easy to become jealous or envious of others’ victories -- or even to experience schadenfreude, which is deriving pleasure from witnessing (or learning about) another person’s misfortune. People who have these reactions to the success or misfortune of others are colloquially known as “haters.” It’s important to note that these are natural emotions and in small doses can be helpful in allowing us to see what we care about -- and motivate us to pursue those goals.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Message from the Principal

Dear Ravensworth Community,

How many hours of sleep do children need each night?  If you answered “seven or eight” your kids may be among millions of sleep-deprived American youngsters.  The ideal amount of sleep for children in elementary school is nine to ten hours per night.  Like adults, they suffer when they don’t get enough sleep.  When children are tired, they have trouble concentrating, become irritable or fidgety, have trouble remembering things and are vulnerable to colds and flu. There are a few tips you can do to help them get the amount of sleep they need:

  • Make time – Don’t allow their lives to get so full of sports and activities that they cannot get everything done they need to before bedtime.
  • Calm down – Relaxing before bedtime by reading a book, taking a bath, or doing something soothing helps children get ready for sleep.
  • Set a schedule – It’s a good idea to have the same bedtime and wake-up time every day, including weekends, because the human body functions best on a regular schedule.
  • Be firm – Make sure children understand that complaining about bedtime isn’t going to change their bedtime.
  • Be aware of caffeine – Many popular drinks, including sodas are loaded with caffeine.  If they want a drink before bedtime, try milk, fruit juice, or water.
  • Promote bedtime reading – Reading is a great way to drift into sleep.

It’s hard enough for a child to get by with too little sleep and it’s even harder when sleep deprivation becomes a nightly habit.  I hope some of these tips help.  The earlier your children go to bed, the more time you and the adults in your family have to relax and enjoy the evening.

Maybe you can even catch up on your own sleep!  Pleasant dreams.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

This week our school community will focus on Forgiveness. You forgive those who have done wrong. You accept that people make mistakes. Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured and allow yourself to reconcile with the person who hurt you. Forgiveness can often be seen as a selfless act, but it also carries many benefits for those who practice it. Those who demonstrate forgiveness have the ability to move forward after someone has hurt them. Forgiveness is often rooted in the idea that all people are valuable and worthy of a second chance. Many who forgive have the ability to consider things from another’s perspective.

Positivity Project

Next week our school community will focus on Social Intelligence. You are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. You understand why they do things. Social intelligence refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It is distinct from a person’s IQ or “book smarts.” It includes an individual’s ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts,

and behaviors of other people. This type of intelligence can take place “in the moment” of face-to-face conversations but also appears during times of deliberate thinking. It involves emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

Preparing Families for Difficult Conversations about Alcohol and Drugs     Positivity Project

This week our school community will focus on Perseverance. You complete what you start despite obstacles. You never give up.  The concept of perseverance can most often be found in one’s active pursuit in overcoming obstacles. Perseverance is a uniquely human characteristic that identifies an individual’s ability to spend long periods of time devoted to a single goal or set of goals. Those who persevere are able to set goals for themselves and then take active, calculated steps toward those goals. People demonstrating high levels of perseverance are able to handle significant, sometimes repeated, setbacks in pursuit of goals.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

This week our school community will focus on Prudence. Prudence means you plan for the future and achieve your goals by making careful everyday choices. Prudence is the ability to do the right thing for the right reason, at the right time. Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made

FCPS’ inclement weather procedures will remain the same as last year. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will use the flexibility provided by The Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning. Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction, following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule (includes a two-hour delays.

FCPS website: https://www.fcps.edu/ is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in [email protected], bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Your school’s principal will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. The multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and healthcare.

Multicultural and Language Resources for Families

FCPS’ Office of Family and School Partnerships would like to remind families of some of the many resources available to them:

  • Bilingual community liaisons support student registrars by providing families with information about school and community services offered in Fairfax County. Liaisons are available to help families speaking Spanish, Korean, and Arabic. Once registered at a school, families can contact their family liaison for assistance.
  • Early literacy programs are available to Fairfax County residents for parents of children up to 5 years old. These programs help prepare children for school and build confidence in parents as their child’s first teacher. They also help parents become active partners in their child’s education. Programs are available in African-Heritage, Arabic, Spanish, and Korean.
  • Parent Information Phone Lines are available in eight languages for parents who speak languages other than English.
  • A Multilingual Family Podcast is produced by the offices of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Family and School Partnerships, and Professional Learning and Equity. It covers important information for parents in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Korean.
  • ESOL services are available in Fairfax County not only for students, but also for adults and families. Information on Spring classes will be posted in March 2023.

Visit the Family Engagement webpage for more resources.

Positivity Project

This week our school community will focus on Optimism. Optimism means you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it. Hope and optimism represent a state of hopefulness and confidence about the future (both short and long term). People with this strength are future oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. They keep a positive attitude despite setbacks – and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping-stone to achieve their goals.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will focus on Self-Control. Self-Control means you have the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act. Self-control is the act of managing behavior in a way that positively influences goal attainment and living up to standards. Possessing this strength protects people from destabilizing emotional extremes. Those with self-control are able to limit impulsive behavior. They have the ability to experience and navigate difficulty while remaining poised.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction, following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule (includes a two-hour delay).

Positivity Project – Other People Mindset:  Supporting Others When They Struggle

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There is a Chinese saying that sums this up: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.” There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include: listening while they

describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence.

Talking through a problem is a common way to help a person who is going through a tough time. When thinking about how to help them through conversation, it can be useful to (a) validate, rather than dismissing, their feelings, (b) help them reappraise the situation, and (c) *carefully* point out logic/thinking errors that may block them from healing.

To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.
