  Kiss and Ride

Thank you for your patience with last week’s torrential rains.  Going forward, we have reassessed how to keep students socially distanced and safe inside the building while waiting for Kiss and Ride.  There is a plan to hold students safely in the hallways, closer to their exit and get them to vehicles in a quick manner.

  Health Department Communication Update

The Fairfax County Health Department announced a change in their communication process for students waiting for COVID-19 contact interviews. You may read about these changes on the FCHD website. You may also wish you review the FCHD FAQs for parents of school-aged children. We appreciate the continued partnership between FCPS and FCHD.

A Message From Our Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

We are excited to be in the fourth week of school. Thank you for your partnership each day in ensuring your child is feeling healthy prior to sending them to school for the day. Here is a health screening tool you can review each morning. https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/HealthScreeningQuestionnaire.pdf

Please err on the side of keeping children home to limit the exposure to staff and students. Families being cautious are making a huge difference in keeping our school safe and healthy.

We are looking forward to our virtual Back to School Literacy Night on Thursday, September 30. Your child’s classroom teacher will email information on joining them via Zoom that evening. Videos from me, information from the PTA and messages from the School Board will be posted on our school website by September 29.

As we’ve started the school year, teachers have been giving a variety of assessments to determine student academic levels following virtual learning. Teachers will be using this information to guide large and small group instruction. Students who are demonstrating significant weaknesses in literacy or math will be identified for additional interventions. There is no need to request interventions, as these will be determined based on data collected.

We are continuing to work on creative ideas to prioritize student and staff safety. Some of our students have been eating outdoors whenever possible. We will continue to be creative as weather conditions shift this fall and indoor eating is required. Please know we have safe eating plans for inside and outside eating.

Thank you for your continued partnership.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

  Emergency Preparedness and Safety Drills

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

  Positivity Project Family Information

Beginning next week our students will be learning about the Positivity Project.

What is The Positivity Project?

The Positivity Project (P2) is dedicated to empowering America’s youth to build positive relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others. Their vision is to help schools and families cultivate citizens and leaders who will enhance our communities and country. Positive psychology’s scientifically validated 24 character strengths serve as its foundation. Positive psychology teaches that people have all 24 strengths within them – and that character is not just skills or behaviors, but rather an intrinsic part of each of us.

P2 is not a program with strict guidelines. Instead, it educates teachers on the character strengths and relies on them to teach in a way that best meets their students’ needs. It is a school-wide endeavor, grounded in the consistency of daily classroom instruction. Their model is holistic; it incorporates students, educators, and parents through regular interaction with character strengths vocabulary and concepts.

The project will help educators instill vocabulary and the meaning of the strengths through explicit teaching of each strength for 15 minutes per day. Schools will dedicate one week to each strength to help students understand them through definition, examples, discussions, and exercises. Schools and educators are encouraged to tailor the materials for their own best use, as they know their students and curriculum better than anyone else.

What are the benefits of implementing The Positivity Project?

P2 ideals evolve throughout a student’s whole school career. The 24 character strengths develop and gain more meaning for students as they grow. Once students learn the meaning of each strength and what it looks like, they can then be embedded into the curriculum in every subject area. The character strengths become a part of a common vocabulary and they will see them in everything that they do.

P2 empowers students by acknowledging that the 24 character strengths are already a part of who they are as people. It helps them to realize that each and every one of them have these strengths. There is no system in place to reward students who demonstrate “Good Character”. Rewards are fun to earn but they are finite because they are external. We want children to internalize the traits that society honors. Acknowledgement to oneself and realizing that you have the power to effect others in a positive way is much more meaningful and rewarding.

Positive character strengths can and should be acknowledged in the classroom, as it gives students a richer understanding of what the character strength looks like in their peer group. Students understand that they have their own “Super Power” and they will be acknowledged and valued for their own character strengths.

How can you help?

We would love for you to take an active role in your child’s character strength education. By using the character strengths vocabulary and having discussions about the concepts, you will help your child understand the character in themselves and others in a different light. You can follow our social media handles to see what we’re doing each day – and tap into P2 for Families here: https://posproject.org/p2-for-families/

Returning Strong: How Pausing, Quarantining, and Isolating Keeps Our Schools Safe

Since the beginning of August, the majority of COVID-19 cases have been acquired through community spread, outside of school buildings.

FCPS’ layered prevention strategies are working to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our schools. Pausing, quarantining, and isolating are tools we use to keep schools safe when a positive COVID-19 case is reported. Understanding the difference between the three scenarios can help families be prepared.

Pause

A pause to in-person instruction is a short-term safety measure used by FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) to allow time to investigate and determine the safest way to address a positive case within our school community. The pause will be initiated by the FCHD for anyone who interacted with an individual who reported a positive COVID-19 case.

  • A pause typically lasts between 24-48 hours while FCHD verifies vaccination status and completes contact tracing.
  • Vaccination status may reduce the time spent in a pause but must be verified every time an individual is put on a pause.
  • The FCHD does not accept a negative COVID-19 test to release an individual from the pause.
  • You will be contacted by the FCHD with a date they can return to school or work.
  •  This flowchart best explains what happens when there is a pause.
Close Contact

A close contact is any person, regardless of vaccination status, who is within six feet of a COVID-19 positive individual for equal to or greater than 15 minutes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) K-12 Exception indicates that students will not be identified as close contacts if they are at least three feet apart and are consistently wearing masks in the classroom setting. Adults are not included in this exception.

Quarantine

When a student is identified as a close contact, there are two things that may occur as a result:

  • Not fully vaccinated students who are identified as a close contact with someone with COVID-19 must remain home for 14 days after their last exposure. FCPS will notify a student of their return date.
  • Fully vaccinated students must remain home until their vaccination status is verified. Upon verification of vaccination status by the FCHD, and if the student/staff is asymptomatic, they may return to in-person learning and activities once notified by FCPS of their return date.
Isolation

Isolation is the response when someone tests positive for COVID-19. Students who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 may not return until:

  • It has been at least 10 days since the student first had symptoms, AND
  • The student must be fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, AND
  • The student’s symptoms are getting better.

FCPS is committed to providing students with opportunities to remain engaged in learning when they are in a pause, quarantine, or isolation period. This chart outlines the ways students receive instruction and materials.

FCPS’ goal is to keep students learning in-person all year. We are doing our part by implementing layered prevention strategies and working with FCHD to address positive cases and potential exposures. Every FCPS student and family can do their part by wearing masks, getting vaccinated when they are eligible, practicing healthy hygiene, and staying home when sick.

Message from our Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

We’re excited about week two of our new school year. It’s been nice to have the halls and classrooms filled with the sounds of learning and laughter. We appreciate your trust in our taking care of your children. We do not take the responsibility lightly. We continue to watch the news and make adjustments to keep our students safe while at school. We are looking to hire additional staff members to support our students during breakfast and lunch times.

Last week we highlighted our new information platform and teacher management tool, Schoology.  A large benefit of the transition to this new system is that families have their own access to this portal and do not need their child’s information to access newsletters, announcements, or assignments. Staff is still building their familiarity with this new tool. Keep your eyes posted for information as this tool will be used frequently this school year.  Stay tuned for more information about this new format.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Message from our Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

We have had an exciting start to the school year. We were happy to have our Ravens back in the building and filling our space up with the noise of learning and laughter.

We will be working through the kinks in these first few weeks and will keep you informed as changes occur. We expect the transportation will still be delayed until the routes become familiar to the drivers and the children are able to identify their bus. Please remind them of their bus number to help with loading in the afternoon.

Our school water fountains continue to be closed; please make sure your child has a refillable water bottle each day with their name on it. They are able to refill it throughout the day.

Thank you!

Erika Aspuria

Principal

  Health and Safety Guidelines

As we begin the 2021-22 school year, FCPS is aware of your questions and concerns about the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus. The health and safety of our students, staff, and community are the school system’s highest priority and every day we are working closely with health officials to review our layered prevention strategies and ensure our schools and buildings are safe places to learn and work. We are also using universal masking as a key mitigation strategy as we gear up to start the school year five days in-person.

We encourage all families to review the FCPS Health & Safety Document which includes information regarding:

  • Universal Mask Wearing
  • Cleaning & Disinfecting
  • Hand Hygiene & Respiratory Etiquette
  • Ventilation
Screen for Illness Every Day, Stay Home When Sick

As a reminder, any student who is ill or has COVID-like symptoms should remain at home. The daily health screening questionnaire and all translated versions can be found on our Health and Safety Guidance webpage. Daily completion of the health screening is done on an honor basis and does not need to be sent to the school.

  FCPS Mask Guidelines

Approved Masks vs Not Recommended Masks

Full details regarding face masks are available in the Health and Safety Guidance Document.

Approved Types of Masks

  • Disposable masks
  • Cloth mask coverings
  • Gaiters
  • Clear masks
  • Cloth masks with clear plastic panel

All face coverings/masks must meet the following requirements:

  • Face coverings/masks that fit properly (snugly around the nose and chin with no large gaps around the sides of the face)
  • Face covering/mask with two (2) or more layers of non-woven material

Face Coverings/Masks that are Not Recommended

  • Face coverings/masks that do not fit properly (large gaps, too loose or too tight)
  • Face coverings/masks or gaiters with one layer
  • Face coverings/masks with exhalation valves or vents
  Cultural Observances and Religious Holidays

The Fairfax County School Board voted to approve a calendar for the 2021-2022 Calendar that is designed to recognize, respect, and honor the plurality of religious and cultural observances in Fairfax County. The calendar ensures students will not have to make choices between honoring their cultural or religious beliefs and missing a test or school activity.

On the observance days listed below, Ravensworth ES will not schedule tests or quizzes. Tests and quizzes will be given before any of these days, so students are not expected to study on the observance day.

In addition, Ravensworth ES will not schedule class-level, grade-level or schoolwide special events on any of the observance days below. The calendar recognizes diverse religious and cultural observances including:

  • Rosh Hashanah 9/7/2021
  • Yom Kippur 9/16/2021
  • Diwali 11/4/2021
  • Bodhi Day 12/8/2021
  • Three Kings Day/Epiphany 1/6/2022
  • Orthodox Christmas 1/7/2022
  • Orthodox Epiphany 1/19/2022
  • Lunar New Year 2/1/2022
  • Ramadan 4/3/2022
  • Good Friday 4/15/2022
  • Theravada 4/16/2022
  • Orthodox Good Friday 4/22/2022
  • Eid al-Fitr  5/3/2022

The 2021-22 calendar also separates spring break from any religious or cultural observances.

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

The Health Information Form (HIF) (SS/SE -71) Health Information Form and the Emergency Care Information form (SS/SE-3) Emergency Care Information provide valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHNs) utilize the information contained in the HIF to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health Related Needs.

For SY 21-22, these forms will be required for all students. Parents/guardians may submit these forms either through electronic submission accessed within the weCare@school (weCare) module; or through Back to School packets for those families without ParentVue accounts.

Will You Have a Change of Transportation?

Here are additional precautionary measures we will take:

School Safety Information

Universal Masking: FCPS requires everyone (students, teachers, staff, and visitors) to wear a mask inside schools and FCPS buildings. Students and staff may remove masks while actively eating, for outside recess, physical education class, or other outside activities.

Handwashing/Sanitizing: We will continue to focus on hand washing/sanitizing throughout the school day. Some examples include: entering and exiting the playground, before and after eating, and when entering the classroom.

Buses: Masks are required on the bus. FCPS school buses will seat more than one student to a seat as needed.

Care Room: If a staff member observes a student displaying symptoms of COVID-19 s/he directs the child to our Care Room (separate from the Health Room, where students get medications, band-aids, etc.) for care and parent pickup. FCPS has protocols for our staff to follow when infections are known or suspected.

FCPS is committed to continuity of learning during the 2021-2022 school year. We want to ensure our families that while we can never guarantee total student safety, we have layered prevention strategies in place, and our staff takes them seriously. We are planning for a fabulous year of learning and fun and want all our Ravensworth student to be healthy and able to have a fantastic learning experience this year.

Families, We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Ravensworth, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://ravensworthes.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources.Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

A Message from the Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

The Ravensworth staff and I hope you are enjoying your summer and are beginning to think about the start of the 2021-2022 school year.  We have been working hard throughout this summer to prepare for the return of all our students to a full-time school experience.  It certainly is exciting to know that the building will be full of children once again, ready to learn, and eager to continue their educational journey.  Our goal for this school year is to ensure a safe and welcoming environment that will support the needs of all children.  We realize that our Ravens are returning to school with varying experiences following the COVID-19 pandemic and our staff is committed to supporting each student by name and need. In addition to supporting our students, we will also continue to strengthen our community partnership with all families.  Your support and partnership throughout the pandemic’s educational experience was critical to our student’s success and we intend to continue our work together.  I am proud of the active involvement of our community, which is a key component that makes Ravensworth successful.

Our bell schedule for this school year will return to the pre-COVID schedule of 8:35 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. More information will be forthcoming to families of students who are eligible for transportation in the coming weeks.  Additionally, all families will be receiving information about classroom assignments directly from Ravensworth prior to Open House.  We are diligently working to place all students as we continue to receive new student registrations daily.

Once again, our Ravensworth Staff is excited to have all our Ravens returning to the nest soon.  Enjoy the remainder of your summer and take care.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Mental Wellness Consultations

This summer, the FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 28 through August 6, 2021. This opportunity will be shared simultaneously with parents via News You Choose.  Parents and students will have an opportunity to schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:

  1. Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
  2. Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or the transition back to school in the fall. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time-management.

All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service by clicking here to request a consultation or leaving a message at 571-423-4276.

A Message from the Principal

It is so hard to believe that the end of the school year has arrived. This school year has been unique and has required flexibility, resiliency and perseverance from students, families and staff. Our families and PTA stepped up to partner with us to ensure our students were as successful as possible. Our students have definitely mastered many new skills this year – their technology skills are certainly far beyond where they would have been in a typical school year. Our teachers have learned a great deal as well and will carry that learning forward to enhance the instruction for all of our students.

We are planning for students to return for five full days of in-person learning in August. However, we are still awaiting information on large events we typically host, such as Back to School Night, New Student Orientation Events and Open House. Once we have additional information, we will share this with our families. The first day of school is Monday, August 23, 2021.

Final report cards will be mailed out next week to all students. Official SOL scores for students who took these assessments in grades 3-6 will be mailed by Virginia Department of Education to families sometime prior to the start of the 2021-22 school year.

We wish you and your family a restful summer break and look forward to seeing our students and families again in August. If your family is departing the Ravensworth community, we hope you will stay in touch. We will continue to take great pride in the accomplishments of our students.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal
