A Message from The Pincipal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

Recently, a new program has been purchased by FCPS for all schools to help parents and staff monitor the websites students are browsing during lessons within the school day when laptops are being used. This internet content filtering services is called Lightspeed.

In the spirit of always wanting to maximize transparency for you, and safety for your children, I want to share with you that any parent or guardian interested in knowing more about their child’s internet browsing activity on an FCPS device can sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed at no cost. This report will provide a list of the top sites your child visited that week.

Additionally, the weekly Parent Report offers you the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through this portal, you may pause your child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Aspuria

Principal

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.

  Thanksgiving Message from Mrs. Aspuria

Dear Ravensworth Families and Community,

I want to take a moment to wish all of you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. Personally, I continue to be very grateful to be a part of such a supportive and caring school community. I feel confident saying that your children truly bring joy to the staff and me every day!  This year my husband and I are looking forward to spending time with our daughters and savoring these family moments as they continue to grow and get older.  Quality time focusing on family is important during the holidays and I have asked all Ravensworth staff members to keep this in mind over the break as well.  Please know that our staff will not be answering emails during the Thanksgiving break so that they can use this time to relax and recharge.  We will be ready and eager to assist you once we return.  Whatever your plans are, home or away, please have a peaceful yet festive respite and make the time to focus on your family!

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

  Students Attendance and engagement

During the Academic Matters segment of the November 9 School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid discussed student attendance and engagement. Attendance and absenteeism rates are one measure for Goal 2 of our 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

Chronic absenteeism — which is defined as a student missing 10% or more of school for any reason — is a concern across Virginia school districts. Although FCPS continues to outperform the state average in attendance rates, we are tracking chronic absenteeism closely.

Data shows that:

  • Missing just 10% of school — just two days a month — negatively affects a student’s academic performance.
  • Only 17% of students who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade were reading proficiently in third grade, compared to 64% of those with good attendance.
  • Students who fail to read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than students who achieve proficiency to drop out of high school.
  • By sixth grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.

Attendance is critical for academic success!

Missing School Over the Holidays

Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is unavoidable, please speak with your child’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work. However, a homework packet cannot make up for the interaction and learning that happens in the classroom

Visit FCPS’ website for more attendance resources.

How Can Families Support Student Attendance?

● Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day.

● Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.

● Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.

● Monitor your child’s academic progress and seek help from teachers when necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.

● Encourage your teen to join meaningful after-school activities, including sports and clubs.

● If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to their teacher, school counselor, and other parents for guidance and support.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will continue to focus on the character strength of Gratitude. Gratitude means you are aware of and thankful for good things that happen.

Gratitude is the quality of feelings and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world and that we have received that goodness. People with the strength of gratitude have a readiness to show appreciation for kindness and also to return kindness. A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship-strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship-strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

  Music Notes

Hello from Music!  General Music classes have finished all things pumpkins (5 little pumpkins, 5 perfect pumpkins, Pass the Pumpkin game).  We sang songs, played xylophones, and used rhythm sticks to read quarter and eighth notes.

We now turn our attention to fall songs and Veterans’ Day. Older students will learn how to play the Round Robin Rondo on the xylophones and learning about the form of a Rondo.  We continue to review note names and are excited to announce Ravens in grades 3-6 will be playing recorders starting in January. More information to come!

The 5th and 6th grade Ravensworth Chorus is busy practicing for their winter concert on Thursday, December 14th at 6PM. In addition, singers have been invited to participate in the LBSS Pyramid Chorus Concert on November 28 (with a practice on November 27th).  Make sure students return interest forms for this event! Ask Ms. Blend or Ms. Dutko if you need another form.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on Bravery. Bravery means you act with mental, moral, or physical strength even when you know things are difficult or scary.

Bravery refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgment; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting. According to Socrates and Plato, forethought separates acts of valor from acts of rashness. This means that bravery isn’t simply fearlessness, but instead the overcoming of fear.

  A Message from The Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

November is National Family Engagement Month! This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers.  Over 35 years of research shows that the most effective way to increase student achievement is for families to be actively involved in their children's education. Family engagement is a shared responsibility between home, school, and the community. We appreciate you attending family/teacher conferences, volunteering in your child’s classroom, and/or attending field trips.

On November 9th, we will be hosting a Family Curriculum Night from 6:00-7:00 pm. Our students and their families can attend and learn games or activities that can support the home-school connection.  We hope you can attend.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of your child and their learning.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

  • What parents should know about their children’s plans.
  • Having a meeting spot in case of getting separated.
  • Establishing safe areas.
  • What to do if you are followed.

Visit the FCPD website for more details on how to discuss safety topics.

  • Establecer zonas seguras.
  • Qué hacer si te siguen.

  Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to specify the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn more about the definitions of the security terms: lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned. If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Knowing That My Words and Actions Affect Others. Everything that you say and do can affect others -- and your relationships with them.

Everything we do, say, text, tweet, snap, or post can positively or negatively impact other people. Our words and our actions are our choices to make, but they can have ripple effects long after we make them. Words and actions have the power to lift others up or tear them down, but, our words and actions also impact ourselves. When a group is comprised of individuals who are thoughtful about their words and actions -- individuals who show respect and consideration for the people around them -- we’re likely to have a happier and healthier culture.

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Creativity. Creativity means you come up with new and original ways to think about and do things.

Creative people can look at the world in original ways. They are open to new experiences and have an imaginative and independent thought process. They generate lots of different ideas and can pursue them with energy and enthusiasm. Creativity is a process that takes courage. Anytime you share your original ideas with the world, you risk being criticized or even ostracized.

Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent. Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

Lexia Parent Night:  Learn About Literacy Support

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction.   Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. At the same time, it provides teachers with the data to identify students who need further support and understand which specific concepts and skills to focus on. Parents and caregivers are invited to learn more about Lexia at information nights. Learn how FCPS is integrating Lexia into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Parents will also be offered tips for supporting their students at home.

Information nights will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on:

  • Wednesday, October 18, at Thoreau Middle School Cafeteria.
  • Thursday, October 19, at Edison High School Auditorium.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of 3rd grade.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

The Impact Aid Program is a federal grant program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program's mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned and therefore tax-exempt property. Your support in identifying students with federal connections will ensure that FCPS can obtain its fair share of grant funds from this program.

The surveys will be available online this year. Please log into ParentVue from October 16 to October 30.  Once logged in, please select the “Online Packets” tab at the top, then select “Federal Impact Aid Survey” from the drop down menu. If you need assistance with creating a Parentvue account please contact Teresa Dunbar in the office.

  Positivity Project

Next week our school community will be focusing on Integrity. This means you are honest and speak the truth.  You present yourself genuinely and sincerely.

Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs. Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

When a Student Should Stay Home from School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss. Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home. If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher, so that assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent. Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

Cuándo un Estudiante Debe Quedarse en Casa y No Ir a la Escuela

2023-24 FCPS School Year Calendar

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Being Present and Giving Others My Attention. This means when I’m with other people, I’m present and give them my full attention.

This element of the Other People Mindset is so important today due to the increasing number of distractions vying for our time and attention. Phone calls, text messages, emails, social media notifications all have the dangerous capacity to pull us away from the present moment and, what’s most important -- our relationships with other people.

Substitutes Needed at Ravensworth for 2023-24

We are always looking for kind and caring substitute teachers and substitute instructional assistants to ensure our students continue to thrive when teachers and instructional assistants need to be out of the classroom. Substitute teaching is a great opportunity for future teachers, stay-at-home family members, retirees, college students, part-time employees, and anyone who wants to make a difference! Substitute instructional assistant pay will be $17.08 per hour and substitute teacher pay will be $19.05 per hour for the 2023-24 school year.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please email Erika Aspuria, Principal and apply on-line. Also, you can sign up for a virtual, one hour substitute information session here.

  Library support needed!

Our librarian, Mrs. Sloan, is looking for a couple of parents who can provide consistent weekly support in the library.  Days and times include Mondays from 9-12 and Wednesdays from 9-10:15. The highest priorities for support include checking out books to students as well as shelving books.  Additional needs include delivering holds to teacher mailboxes, book repair, processing new books, creating book displays, and cutting paper for student bookmarks.  Library experience is preferred.

If you’re interested or have questions, you can contact Mrs. Sloan at [email protected]

Thank you for your consideration!

Open-minded individuals are able to weigh all evidence fairly, when it is available. They see the other side and fight the tendency to have a bias for their own views. And, rather than favoring the socially dominant views, they give attention to those that are less dominant.

An Eagle Project at Ravensworth, Mon, Sept 25th

Former student, Kam Pembleton, will be working on an Eagle Project at Ravensworth ES on Monday, Sept 25th.  Kam and volunteers will be installing a Pollinator Garden in the school courtyard underneath the newly installed stained-glass project.

Project Date:               Sept 25th (Rain Date TBD)

Project Time:              8:00 am – 12:00 pm

Location:                     Enter Door #2 and proceed to your left to the courtyard entrance doors

Who can attend?         Anyone willing to help can attend.  Volunteers are needed! Students and Scouts will receive service hours.

If you can volunteer, you will NEED the following items:

  • Closed toed shoes (Crocs don’t count)
  • WATER!!!
  • Clothes that you do NOT mind getting dirty

Optional items to bring (or will be provided):

  • Snacks
  • Gloves
  • Eye Protection (Some sunglasses will work)

Kam chose to do this project because in 2021 Logan Pembleton, brother to Kam, built an outdoor classroom for Ravensworth ES. Kam wanted to do something for her elementary school and this was the perfect choice! Last school year Mrs. Fortenberry, the art teacher, worked very hard to have a stained-glass mural installed in the courtyard. Kam’s project is to help incorporate that mural into the space and give homes to pollinators.

Thank you to all those who have helped this project come together!

Please RSVP at [email protected] if you plan to attend.

  SR&R Reminder – DUE Friday, October 29, 2021

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. There are two ways for parents to acknowledge that you have received the document:

  1. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.  E-signing for one child will suffice for all siblings within the household. Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.
  2. Download and sign the Parent Signature Sheet and please return the signed signature sheet to your child's teacher.

Signatures are due by October 29, 2021

Please complete ASAP! Required Forms for All Students

  Positivity Project

Next week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Curiosity. Curiosity means you like exploration and discovery. You ask lots of questions because you want to learn more about anything and everything.

Curiosity is a crucial component of one’s character. Our innate urge for discovery and exploration is a key element of our human desire for wisdom and knowledge. It’s what keeps us intrigued in the plotlines of movies and books. It’s what pushes us to try new activities or travel to different places. All individuals experience curiosity but differ in their willingness to experience it -- behaviorally, intellectually, and emotionally.

  School Meals

Preparing for and Paying for Meals at School

Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals

The application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2023-24 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible for the 2023-24 school year, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

Paying With MySchoolBucks

The best way to purchase meals (and keep food lines moving!) is to use MySchoolBucks. Set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today. Our front office staff can help with any questions.

MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically, as needed. Families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account. Visit FCPS’ Food and Nutrition webpage for more information.

Change of Clothing “especially grades K and 1”

Dear Parents:

Spills and accidents can occur in school. Please send in a complete change of clothing inside a labeled Zip lock bag for your child. Please place it inside their backpacks, so the teachers can use it in the event they are needed.

Recognize that everything you say or do affects other people, 3. Support others when they struggle, 4. Cheer people on when they succeed, 5. Remain present when giving people your attention. People who have a strong Other People Mindset are able to build and maintain strong, positive relationships with others.

  A Message from the Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

What a joy it has been to see your children at Ravensworth this week.  Mrs. Padilla and I have had the opportunity to visit classrooms and we’ve been particularly impressed by the way our students have handled the transition back to school.  They are excited to be back, and they were eager to learn.  I’m confident that they will have a wonderful year of learning and growth.

I want to thank you for your partnership in making this a great first week.  Your support is essential to our students’ success.

I look forward to working with you throughout the school year.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

  Preschool Community Peers

Ravensworth Elementary is pleased to announce that we will have community peers in our preschool program. The early childhood special education staff members have been investigating the possible opportunities for our students to participate in integration activities with same age peers. This will involve teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.

Our program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are age 3 ½ -5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

More information will be coming out in the Wednesday Folder on August 30th.  We hope you will consider having your preschool age child with us this school year.

  Transportation – Kiss and Ride

Please help us set good examples for students!  There are crosswalks at Nutting Dr. and Gosport Ln. and also at Nutting Dr. and Ellet Rd.  It is much safer to cross Nutting Dr. at these corners than to park opposite the bus loop and cross Nutting Dr. without a crosswalk.

  Library support needed!

Our librarian, Mrs. Sloan, is looking for a couple of parents who can provide consistent weekly support in the library.  Days and times include: Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am-12pm and Fridays from 9:45am-12pm.  The highest priorities for support include checking out books to 1st and 2nd graders as well as shelving books.
