Bike, Roll & Walk to School Day

Leave the car at home and join us for "Bike, Roll and Walk" to school day. This is an annual event that promotes great ways for students to get more physical activity before and after school, reduce the number of cars using kiss and ride and build awareness for how walkable and bikeable the community is. Join children and adults around the world to celebrate the benefits of walking and bicycling. If you are biking or rolling, please obey all traffic rules and wear a helmet.

Planning for the 2024-2025 School Year

It is time to start planning for our next school year. Developing class assignments each year is a complex process. School administration, classroom teachers, counselors, special education staff and specialists all have the opportunity to provide feedback on class groupings.

If you have feedback that you would like for us to consider, please add it to this form https://forms.gle/yKQij5LN5xMx5YEJ7 no later than May 17, 2024. Late submissions will not be accepted. We will consider all feedback provided, but we are not always able to fulfill requests.

We respectfully ask that you do not request particular teachers. It is unfair to give special consideration to some families when it would be impossible to grant requests from all families. Please be aware that grade level assignments for staff sometimes change, due to late enrollments or other changes.  Staff assignments are determined at the end of the summer.

  Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

As we approach the end of the school year, it’s important for students to stay engaged, attend school, and finish strong! Visit our website for attendance resources

  Lunch Time Entertainment

Our students have benefitted from having magazines to look at during their lunchtime! If you have any children’s magazines (Highlights, High Five, Cricket, etc.) gathering dust at home, please send them in with your child.

There will be a collection bin in the lobby near the office.  Our Get to Green Student Group will help with collections.  Thank you so much!

Rising 7th Grade Parent Night at LBSS?   Educate Fairfax   Techstravaganza 2024

  Positivity Project

Next week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Leadership. Leadership means you value each member of your group and inspire people to do their best.

Leadership can be both formal and informal. It is concerned with getting others to do what needs to be done while maintaining group morale to ensure readiness to act in the future. This character strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of leaders rather than the practice of leadership. These qualities include the ability to understand others and inspire them toward a common goal, the capacity to mitigate conflict and mold consensus, and the desire to lead other people.

  PTA   Teacher Appreciation Next Week

Teacher Appreciation Week is next week, May 6th through May 10th and we want to let our Ravensworth Elementary teachers know how grateful we are to have them educating our children. The PTA will be providing food but needs your help with additional snacks and drinks. A SignUpGenius has been created for anyone wishing to assist in this endeavor. Any items can be brought to the front office throughout the week in preparation for Teacher Appreciation Week. Thanks for helping those that help us every day!

  Message from the Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

It is hard to believe that today is the last Friday in April.

This is a busy time of year for our Ravens.  Many of our grade levels have field trips scheduled over the next few weeks.  We appreciate our family volunteers who will be chaperoning these trips.  Our grades 3-6 students have been reviewing for the upcoming SOLs.  Please refer to the schedule above to see when your child will be testing.

We hope you and your family enjoy the weather as it continues to warm up.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact our counselors Mr. Austin or Mrs. Ezikpe.

Next week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Enthusiasm.  Enthusiasm means you approach life with excitement and energy. You energize people around you.

Enthusiasm is the ability to bring life and excitement to different situations. It often leads to a higher level of involvement and engagement both for individuals and for groups. Those who demonstrate enthusiasm bring an energy and level of intensity to individual and group work. These people are often identified as early leaders and innovators as a result of their outward excitement about a task or project. Look for these people to recruit new group members and generate ideas.

Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Services Internal Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024.
Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

  Positivity Project

Next week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. Appreciation of beauty and excellence means you notice and value the world’s beauty and people’s skills. You don’t take things for granted.

Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence is the ability to identify and enjoy that which is admirable in the world. There are three types of goodness in which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, a song, or building); an exceptional skill or talent; and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Appreciation of beauty can generate awe; appreciation of a skill can generate admiration; and appreciation of moral goodness can generate moral elevation. All of these feelings (awe, admiration, and moral elevation) help us forget ourselves and find increased joy and meaning in the world.

Next week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Purpose. Purpose means you have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself.

Purpose gives individuals the sense that they are put on this earth for a reason and that they are somehow connected with humanity or the universe. People who possess a sense of purpose believe that they were put on earth for a reason. That reason can have all kinds of variety. It could be to create a unique invention, bring joy through art or music, or raise their children to become good people. These people have a true calling.

Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024 and will be viewable, depending on weather, in the Fairfax County area. In our area, the eclipse will begin around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m. This timing overlaps with some dismissal times and it is crucial that schools reiterate the importance of safe viewing practices.

There has been an update to the original Solar Eclipse guidance that was shared previously. Schools should continue to encourage indirect viewing (solar projectors, pinhole projectors, watching the NASA livestream).  Direct viewing with ISO 12312-2 approved glasses is also a safe option.  It is important that any glasses used have this specific label on them. The use of sunglasses or other dark eye coverings are not approved.

We continue to encourage schools to inform their communities of proper eye safety during the eclipse. Please see references on the Solar Eclipse Resources FCPS website link.

We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon.

  Positivity Project

Next week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Humor. Humor means you like to laugh and bring smiles to other people.

Humor is a sense of playfulness and lightness. It is a way of looking at and describing the world that brings laughter to people. A person with the strength of humor is skilled at seeing the funny side of things, bringing smiles and laughter to others, and identifying and communicating the absurdities in life. People with this strength don’t specifically need to be joke tellers, although many are.

  Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher workdays. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

¡Asiste a Clases Hoy Para Tener Éxito Mañana!

  Updated Covid Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Purple Up - Month of the Military Child

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is gearing up to honor and celebrate its military-connected youth in April, the Month of the Military Child and on Purple Up! Day!

This year, Virginia will celebrate Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 17. Purple Up! Day is a special day for communities to come together and wear purple as a visible gesture of support for our military-connected youth and their families. Purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military.

At Ravensworth, we would like to honor our military-connected-students by highlighting them on the digital slideshow in our lobby. If you are a military-connected family, please send in a picture or two of you and your child/children that showcases their life as a military kid. It does not need to be a recent photo, but we would love to see you in uniform with your child or see a photo of your family that showcases your child’s military travels.  Please email your photos to Annie Bowen [email protected]

  Elementary Institute for the Arts

Students in all FCPS schools can enroll in the Elementary Institute for the Arts. IFTA is a weekly Arts enrichment program for students in rising 3rd through 6th grades during the month of July. Students take classes in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance every day. Transportation is provided from around the county. Tuition assistance is available for students who qualify. Check out the Elementary Institute for the Arts website for more information or email [email protected].

  Positivity Project

The week from April 1st to April 5th our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Fairness. Fairness means you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.

Fairness is the product of moral judgement — the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions: the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.

  PTA PTA Open Board Position

The PTA is looking for someone willing to assume the role of Treasurer for the 2023-2024 school year. Unfortunately, our current Treasurer, Lane, is unable to continue in the position. While we will miss her in that role, it opens a wonderful opportunity for someone looking to get involved. The position includes:

  • Tracking and inputting incomes and expenses to QuickBooks
  • Creating Monthly Budget Reports and presenting them at Meetings
  • Writing checks and depositing payments received
  • Attending monthly meetings

The position demands anywhere between 2-5 hours of work per month. While an accounting background and QuickBooks experience is helpful, it is not necessary.

Anyone interested in the role can send an email to [email protected]. Further questions about the role may be sent to [email protected]

  Author Visiting our Ravens

We’re excited to announce that award-winning author Wendy Wan-Long Shang  will be visiting our Ravens on Wednesday, March 20th!  Wendy has written a variety of books many of which are available for checkout in our library.

“As a child, books meant freedom. If you could read in my kindergarten class, you were allowed to go to the library by yourself, and libraries were the loveliest freedom I could imagine. If I had a book, I had a companion for a long dinner with grown-ups. I could learn about anything, go anywhere, pretend to be anyone.” (Wendy Wan-Long Shang)

Wendy lives in northern Virginia with her husband, children, a cat and a dog.

To learn more about Wendy Wan-Long Shang and her books, you can visit her webpage.  If you’re interested, there are signed copies of Wendy’s books available for purchase here.

  Advanced Academics Information

You can find the Spring Advanced Academics Newsletter, including translations, posted on Schoology.  Included is an overview of services and the process for submitting referrals for school-based services to begin in the 2024-25 school year. Any questions, please reach out to Andrea Trumbull, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher at [email protected].

  Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days.

Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with our school’s dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

For more information and/or to connect with FCPS resources, email us at [email protected].

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Perspective. Perspective means you appreciate when people see things in different ways. You have the ability to understand the world from multiple points of view.

Perspective is also referred to as wisdom and is distinct from intelligence. People with this strength are sought out for advice because they see the big picture and can make sense of the world’s complexity. This strength of perspective gives individuals the ability to see to the heart of difficult matters and achieve clarity. Most importantly, they are honest and behave in an ethically consistent manner.

  Ramadan

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity, and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is a religious and cultural observance day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances during the school year. There is school on observance days, however, tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be scheduled. See the school year calendar.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Identifying and Appreciating the Good in Others. It’s important to deliberately work to identify and appreciate others’ character strengths.

Identifying and appreciating the good in others is a core tenet of the Other People Mindset. This isn’t always what comes naturally. Often, it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment. The problem is that this negativity usually leads to problems -- for ourselves, for the other person, and for our relationships.

  A Message from The Principal

Hi Ravensworth Families,

We had another wonderful week of learning.  Today our students started their day with Chua Martial Arts as part of a cultural arts assembly arranged by the Ravensworth PTA.  Our students enjoyed a demonstration of the Lion Dance performance which included percussion, movement, and martial arts.  The Lion Dance is a ritual in Chinese tradition believed to bring good fortune and happiness.  To learn more, visit www.chuamartialarts.com or search for Chua Martial Arts on social media.  Thank you to the Ravensworth PTA for sponsoring this wonderful opportunity.

Next week we’re excited to celebrate Read Across America.  Check out the schedule below for more information regarding our theme for each day.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

  Student and Family Surveys

Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means you master new topics on your own or in school.

Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize of a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.

Developing a love of learning is highly beneficial for an individual. It means that they are intrinsically motivated to deepen their existing skills and abilities, or learn something completely new. Since intrinsically motivated action is correlated with positive emotions, those who act on their love of learning may also have enhanced mental and physical health. Additionally, individuals who love learning have the desire and ability to overcome challenges, due to a sense of autonomy and control over their environment.

  Message from the Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

Student safety is a top priority at Ravensworth ES.  We have become aware of safety concerns that are occurring during arrival and dismissal.  To ensure the safety of all students, please follow these procedures.

If students are arriving at school by car, they must be dropped off at Kiss and Ride for their safety.  Please do not park across Nutting Drive and cross where there is not a crosswalk.  We have observed several instances of students almost being struck by a bus or car while crossing the street in front of the school.

Please do not park in front of driveways.  We have received complaints from residents in the neighborhood that they are unable to access their homes.

Thank you for your help in making arrival and dismissal safe for all students.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

  Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Humility. Humility means you do not seek the spotlight. You let your actions speak for themselves.

Humble people have an accurate (not underestimated) sense of their abilities and achievements. They hold the capacity to acknowledge their mistakes and limitations, and are open to advice and new ideas. They do not show off their possessions or accomplishments.

Developing humility is associated with positive developmental outcomes in individuals. It allows a person to honestly reflect on their abilities and acknowledge how and where they can improve. Humility opens them up to new ideas, advice, and (consequently) abilities that pride, arrogance, or pretentiousness often block. Therefore, humility makes them desired members of a team.

Substitutes Needed at Ravensworth for 2023-24

We are always looking for kind and caring substitute teachers and substitute instructional assistants to ensure our students continue to thrive when teachers and instructional assistants need to be out of the classroom. Substitute teaching is a great opportunity for future teachers, stay-at-home family members, retirees, college students, part-time employees, and anyone who wants to make a difference! Substitute instructional assistant pay will be $17.08 per hour and substitute teacher pay will be $19.05 per hour for the 2023-24 school year.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please email Erika Aspuria, Principal and apply on-line. Also, you can sign up for a virtual, one hour substitute information session here.

  Online Read-A-Thon

Read for Ravensworth is like a jog-a-thon, except your child will be reading books instead of running laps, and earning pledges based on how much they read. Everything is tracked online, which makes inviting sponsors and logging reading much easier!

You will receive written instructions on how to access and authorize your child's private account on Wednesday, February 28th. Participation in the fundraising portion of this event is optional and we hope that every student will participate by READING!

The character strength of love represents the way we think, feel, and behave towards the people with whom we have close relationships. When one person loves another person, that person: comforts and makes the other feel safe; sacrifices on the other’s behalf; supports the other during struggles; and places the others' needs ahead of their own. If you love a person, that person makes you feel safe and secure. You can be yourself with that person. You miss that person when they are not around.

  A Message from The Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

It is hard to believe that this week we started the third quarter.  We are kicking off No Name Calling Week on Monday, February 5th.  No Name-Calling Week is a nationwide effort to teach students about the harmful impacts of name-calling and provide positive community building opportunities to help prevent bullying.  Teachers will incorporate activities and discussions based on the daily theme in their morning meetings each day.  The them for Monday, February 5th, What’s In a Name?.  Over the weekend, please discuss with your child how they got their name and why it is special.  A flyer with more details will be coming home on Monday afternoon.

On Thursday, February 8th at 6:30 pm we will be hosting a virtual family coffee.  Our topic is Empowering Parents to Navigate Challenges in the Digital Age.  Our session will focus on understanding and addressing the challenges of technology and impacts it can have on students academically and socially. Equip yourself with valuable insights and practical strategies to foster a safe and supportive environment for your child online. Let's collaborate to navigate the ever-evolving digital landscape together.  Registration is required for this event. Use this link to register https://forms.gle/9MFXoqXciT6WTqYV7 The deadline for registration is Feb 8th at 12 p.m.  A Zoom link will be sent on February 8th by 12:30 p.m.

We hope to see you virtually on Thursday, February 8th at 6:30 pm for our family coffee.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Items not claimed by March 31st will be sent to donation.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Cheering Others’ Successes. This means when other people succeed, I am happy for them and cheer them on.

Being happy for other people when they succeed isn’t always everyone’s initial reaction. Often, it’s easy to become jealous or envious of others’ victories -- or even to experience schadenfreude, which is deriving pleasure from witnessing (or learning about) another person’s misfortune. People who have these reactions to the success or misfortune of others are colloquially known as “haters.” It’s important to note that these are natural emotions and in small doses can be helpful in allowing us to see what we care about -- and motivate us to pursue those goals.

  Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather is here! As temperatures drop, please be sure to send your children with coats and outerwear to keep them warm for outdoor activities.  Bringing these additional items to and from school means that the Lost & Found is growing!  Please be sure to label your child's items and encourage them to check the Lost & Found in cafeteria for any missing items.

Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place where we will post an emergency weather closing. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and plan for childcare if appropriate.

  Snow Days

Snow Days This Winter

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Forgiveness.  Forgiveness means you forgive those who have done wrong, and you accept that people make mistakes.

Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured and allow yourself to reconcile with the person who hurt you. Forgiveness can often be seen as a selfless act, but it also carries many benefits for those who practice it. Those who demonstrate forgiveness have the ability to move forward after someone has hurt them. Forgiveness is often rooted in the idea that all people are valuable and worthy of a second chance. Many who forgive have the ability to consider things from another’s perspective.

  Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Social Intelligence. Social intelligence means you are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. You understand why they do things.

Social intelligence refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It is distinct from a person’s IQ or “book smarts.” It includes an individual’s ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other people. This type of intelligence can take place “in the moment” of face-to-face conversations but also appears during times of deliberate thinking. It involves emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
