Elementary Progress Report  Quarter 1, 2020-2021 School Year

This year’s virtual start to the school year has created some modifications to the way your child’s teacher marks the Qtr. 1 Elementary Progress Report.  The information below serves as guidance for understanding the marks and any modifications that have been made due to our current environment.  

Standards-Based Grades and Progress Report

A standards-based progress report:

• Measures a student’s progress according to how he or she is performing on expected standards.
• Provides detailed information about what a student is learning and can demonstrate in each content area.
• Is one form of communication from teachers to parents. Parent-teacher communication is encouraged throughout the school year. 

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) standards-based progress report is aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and the FCPS Program of Studies.  

Elementary Reporting  Modifications for Qtr. 1

• Progress report marks for the 20-21 SY are in accordance with Essential Standards for School Year 2020-21.
• Achievement Level marks may include  “NT” for material not taught and “NA” for material not assessed.  Due to the delayed start of the school year, adjustment to virtual instruction, and emphasis placed on community building in an online environment;  there may be a greater number of “NA”s represented on the Quarter 1 progress report than in a typical school year. 
• Additional time is needed to accurately indicate your child’s reading progress; therefore, the on, above, or below reading text level for Q1 is not marked.  Consult with your child’s teacher for additional information.

General Progress Report Information

Life, Work, and Citizenship Skill Levels

These skills are assessed separately from content areas using the four-point rubric and are based on overall behaviors and work habits demonstrated by your child. Teachers may mark “NA” if they have not had the opportunity to assess that skill for your child. 
 

Achievement Levels - Four-point Rubric

4 - Consistently demonstrates concepts and skills of standard taught this quarter

• Frequency of behavior, nearly all the time
• Requires no support when demonstrating understanding
• Demonstrates a thorough understanding of content taught
• Makes no major errors or omissions when demonstrating concepts or processes taught

3- Usually demonstrates concepts and skills of standard taught this quarter

• Frequency of behavior, most of the time
• Requires limited support when demonstrating understanding
• Demonstrates a general understanding of content taught
• Makes few major errors or omissions when demonstrating concepts or processes

2- Sometimes demonstrates concepts and skills of standard taught this quarter

• Frequency of behavior, some of the time
• Requires moderate support in order to demonstrate an understanding of concepts and skills
• Demonstrates a partial understanding of content taught
• Makes some errors or omissions when demonstrating concepts or processes

1 -Seldom demonstrates concepts and skills of standard taught this quarter

• Frequency of behavior, seldom
• Requires considerable support in order to demonstrate learning of concepts and skills
• Demonstrates limited understanding of concepts, skills, and processes taught
• Makes frequent major errors when demonstrating concepts or processes

Effort Levels - Four-point Rubric

Effort levels are graded based upon the following criteria:

• Participation
• Perseverance
• Quality of work product
• Receptivity to Feedback

Mathematics Level Explanation The progress report indicates the grade-level content used to instruct your child in mathematics. A student is marked above grade-level in mathematics when at least 80% of his/her instruction was on content above his/her current grade level. This may change by quarter. Y (Yes) Your child was instructed using above grade level content in mathematics N (Not Applicable) Your child was instructed using current grade-level content in mathematics
