Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

  Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.

If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

Advanced Academics Program Meeting: Continuum of AAP Services and Referring for Full-Time AAP   Date: Tuesday, September 24, 2024 Time: 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm Location: Ravensworth Cafeteria

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development efforts and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.  FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach recognizes unique student needs and focuses on matching services, not labeling students. Through the continuum, students have multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop and a cluster group of students with similar academic needs to continue growing in their learning.

If you’re interested in learning more about FCPS’ AAP program, including an overview of the AAP Continuum of Services for all students and/or information regarding the screening process for the Full-Time AAP program, please join us for the AAP Information Meeting on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30 pm. Parents will learn how to refer students currently in grades 2-6 for the Full-Time Advanced Academics Program for the 2025-2026 school year.

Contact our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, Andrea Trumbull ([email protected]), if you have any questions.

  Attendance Matters

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit our website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Read about how families can help form good attendance habits. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

No U-Turns and Blocking Our Neighbors’ Driveways

U-Turns on Nutting are both illegal and very, very dangerous.  We continue to get reports of cars making these illegal U-Turns.  The safety of our school community is compromised every time someone does this. Please take the time to use Kiss-n-Ride and/or find another route. Please be mindful of our neighbors’ driveways by not blocking them.  Thank you!

  Check-Ins

Please remember, if your child arrives after 8:35 AM, you must escort them into the main office and sign them in.

Students are not admitted into the building until 8:20AM, for breakfast or to go to class. Unless, your child attends SACC or a patrol, please do not drop your student off at school any earlier, there will be no adult supervision available.

Please remember to email or call the attendance line with any messages regarding your student's attendance. Absences and late arrivals should be reported to avoid getting a robo-call from FCPS. If you email the teacher to let them know about your student's attendance, please copy [email protected] to ensure your message reaches our attendance staff. You can also call, 703-426-3636 to report any attendance messages.

  Personal Items

Please remember to label clothing items, lunchboxes, water bottles, and whatever else you think your child may leave behind somewhere. If there's a name in it or on it, Ravensworth Staff will do their best to get it back to the owner. If not, it will go into the Lost and Found pile. Lost and Found will be placed outside the school for a week or so frequently for families to look for lost items. All items left at the end of the week will be donated. Please make sure to check the Lost and Found frequently, especially as the seasons change. Thanks for your help in making sure all items return back home to where they belong!

  Community Conversations

Our Schools, Our Future: Register Today for a Community Conversation!

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will host a series of Community Conversations this fall. She invites you to share your thoughts and ask questions.

The next event is scheduled for Monday, September 23, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Newington Forest Elementary School. Click on the date to register. Childcare and language interpretation services will be provided.

  Preschool Community

Ravensworth Elementary is pleased to announce that we still have openings for community peers in our preschool program.  Last year we had several preschoolers who lived in our neighborhood participate in integration activities with same age peers. This program involves teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.

Our program has a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are age 3 ½ -5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

If you are interested in enrolling your preschooler or know of someone who might be, please contact Sarah Minor, Preschool Teacher, at [email protected] or MC Visger, at [email protected].

  National Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6), Middle School (7-8), and High School (9-12).  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or [email protected].

Update Your Child’s Immunizations and Records

Only for new students to FCPS and rising kindergarteners, please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Thursday, September 26th, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office.

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.

Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version.   A Message from the Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

What a joy it has been to see your children at Ravensworth these past two weeks.  Mrs. Heiman and I have had the opportunity to visit classrooms and we’ve been particularly impressed by the way our students have handled the transition back to school.  They are excited to be back, and they were eager to learn.  I’m confident that they will have a wonderful year of learning and growth.

As a reminder, students do not have school on Friday, August 30th and Monday, September 2nd due to the Labor Day holiday.  Our school office will be closed.  I have asked our staff to disconnect over the holiday weekend, so they can return relaxed and refreshed ahead of our very busy month of September.  Our teachers will be available on Tuesday, September 3rd.

I want to thank you for your partnership in making these first two weeks a success.  I look forward to working with you throughout the school year.

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

A survey was sent to families on Tuesday, August 6th by Mrs. Aspuria regarding childcare needs.  All families must respond by September 3rd.

Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Everything You Can Do Through SIS ParentVUE

Want to easily access back-to-school forms and checklists? Log in to your SIS ParentVUE account to find forms and make updates.

Update Contact Information

Be among the first to know about weather closings, bus delays, and other critical communications from your school and FCPS by providing your cell phone number and email in SIS ParentVUE. To update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, click the “Online Packets” tab in the upper right of the screen, then click the “Online Verification/Update” icon.

Parents/caregivers who do not have a SIS ParentVUE account should print and complete the Emergency Care Information Form (PDF) and submit it to their child’s school.

Complete Permission Forms

Families can now easily give permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. This online tool can be accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account. Parents can easily opt their child in or out of resources including online educational tools, school counseling services, and tutoring services. They can also change how student information is managed.

Visit the Parent Digital Consent webpage to access the system. Watch this video to see how to use the tool

Submit Absences

Parents can submit daylong absences through SIS ParentVUE. Log in and click “Report Absence.” Note: Partial day absences and changes of transportation should still be reported directly to the school front office.

Don’t Have a SIS ParentVUE Account Yet?

Contact your school for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage.

Our Commitment to Excellence, Equity, and Opportunity for Each and Every Student

As we begin a new school year, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid reminds us of the goals of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which guides us in delivering excellence, equity, and opportunity for each and every one of our students. Watch Dr. Reid’s message.

  Transportation Patience and Safety

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.

If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2050 with any additional questions. For any concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000

To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Update Your Child’s Immunizations and Records

Only for new students to FCPS or rising kindergarteners, please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

  A Message from the Principal

Dear Students and Families,

As the 2023-24 school year ends, we want to take a moment to wish all of our amazing Ravensworth families a happy and safe summer vacation!

This year has been filled with learning, laughter, and growth. We are incredibly proud of everything our students accomplished, from mastering new reading skills to conquering challenging math problems to building and growing new friendships.

To our students, enjoy your well-deserved break! Explore your interests, spend time with loved ones, and make some unforgettable summer memories. Don't forget to keep your minds active by reading a good book, trying a new hobby, or simply asking questions about the world around you.

To our families, thank you for your unwavering support throughout the school year. Your partnership is essential to our students' success. We appreciate your dedication to their education and well-being.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Thursday, August 15th for our annual open house event. Until then, have a wonderful summer filled with sunshine, relaxation, and new adventures!

Sincerely,

Ms. Aspuria and Ms. Heiman

Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!

It’s a busy time of year, and we know there are many priorities on families’ plates. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember to check your students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families that earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2024-25 school year will be available this summer.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2023-24 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price lunch.

In order to help interpret SOL results for parents, the Virginia Department of Education has released new Standards of Learning Growth Parent Reports for families of students who took grade 3-8 SOL math and reading tests this spring.

The Growth Parent Report ties together scores from fall and winter Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) with the student’s current spring SOL results to show their trend in academic progress this year.

Learn how to understand your student’s grade 3-8 SOL results and find resources to support their ongoing learning.

  A Message From The Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

It is hard to believe that today is the last day of May.  While we celebrate that SOLs are complete, we have so many things to look forward to in June!  Last night we began our fine arts performances.  Our Grades 5 & 6 Chorus did an amazing job.  Next week we are looking forward to our band and strings concerts.  Field Days are quickly approaching with Grades 3-6 on Friday, June 7th and Grades K-2 on Monday, June 10th.  There is information below about how you can volunteer.

Every year we have to say farewell to some of our amazing staff members. This year we have four retiring after many years of committed service. We're sad to be saying goodbye to Pam Miller, Betty Morgan, Kathy Roche, and Barb Silversmith.  Please drop-in to celebrate these amazing ladies on Monday, June 10th between 4:00 - 5:30 PM in the cafeteria.

Our 6th Grade Promotion is scheduled for Tuesday, June 11th at Lake Braddock SS Little Theater beginning at 6:00 pm.  Information regarding the details for parking and student arrival have been distributed to students.  We are looking forward to this special evening.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

End of the Year Medication Pick-Up

Ravensworth Health Room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time (1:20pm) on the last day of school, Wednesday, June 12, which is an early dismissal day. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

If your student has an Epipen in the health room that will expire 90 days or more after the last day of school, and you would like to donate the Epipen to someone in need, please complete this Epipen Donation Form and email it to the school health aide at [email protected]  Epipens left in the health room beyond dismissal time on the last day of school without a signed donation form cannot be donated and will be discarded.

If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

If you have any questions, please contact the school health aide, Paula Condit, at 703-426-3610 or [email protected], or your school public health nurse, Shanie , RN, at [email protected].

Enjoy Fun and Resources at the Summer Extravaganza

Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., for the FCPS Summer Extravaganza. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moonbounce, alpaca petting, storytime, and student performances — all at no cost! Additional food trucks will be on site selling a variety of treats.

Families are invited to take part in engaging educational activities designed to spark curiosity and growth. Community organizations will be providing tips, resources, and helpful information. Visit the Summer Extravaganza webpage for details and register to attend. Registration is not required, but it’s helpful for planning purposes.

  Student Testing Results Coming Soon

Later this month, you will begin receiving your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, view this list of tests by grade level on FCPS’ website.

How the results are delivered depends on the test. Scores will be posted in SIS ParentVUE, or sent by mail or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about student assessments, including what each assessment is testing for and how to interpret the test results. Caregivers should contact their children’s teacher with any testing questions.
